One of the most frequent questions that come across the mind of international students is where to find the accommodation in US? However, there is nothing to bother about since most of the educational institutions in USA assist students in finding accommodation while studying in USA. The accommodation in USA are bifurcated into two categories, they are on campus and off campus. If a student chooses to stay on-campus then he can reside in University’ dormitories (halls), hostels, university owned flats and apartments, sorority houses and fraternity houses. On the other hand, off-campus has private apartments, dorms, share accommodation, home stay and rent accommodation. Though staying off campus is always cheaper than on-campus but it is advised students should prefer on-campus for at least 6 months initially.
Students who select to stay on-campus would be given many extensive facilities like – meal, laundry and dry cleaning, sanitation and recreation. There is an option to choose from catered halls for food or self-catered food. On campus shelters are apt for those who come to US for a short term courses. Staying off-campus is ideal for those who have a tight budget or love to lead an independent life. One of the very popular accommodations in US is share accommodation where two or more students live together in an apartment and share cost and other expenses. Most of these apartments are well-furnished and well equipped which cater to students needs.
As far as accommodation expenditure is concerned, a student spends around $10,000 annually which makes the monthly expenses around $1000 though some students can manage at $700 to$1000. But, living in metropolitan cities like New-York, San-Francisco can cost heavily, the annual budget could reach up to $12,000 in contract with the students living in suburban areas. Your lifestyle also has a crucial role in deciding your accommodation budget.
